US Premiere of ‘Waveriders’ Ahead of Irish April Release Waveriders

IFTA nominated feature documentary 'Waveriders', directed by Joel Conroy, will receive its US Premiere
at the 24th Santa Barbara International Film Festival on the 28th Jan '09. The film is set to be released by Element Pictures Distribution across nationwide cinemas in Ireland and the UK on 3rd April 2009.

The doc explores the little known story of George Freeth, the son of an Irishman, who reintroduced the ancient Polynesian art of wave riding in Hawaii in the early 20th century after it had been stamped out by missionaries. By the time of his untimely death at the age of 35 he was renowned for his legendary skills as a surfer and lifeguard. 'Waveriders' pays fulsome tribute to Freeth’s forgotten legacy and explores the wave of influence he created for surfers everywhere down the years. The unlikely Irish connection to the worldwide phenomenon of surfing comes full circle as we see skilled Irish and British surfers link up with world champion Kelly Slater, soul surfer Kevin Naughton and the renowned Malloy brothers to ride some of the most exciting surf ever seen in Ireland. The film reaches its climax when surfers ride a monster wave reaching heights of over 50’ off the coast of Mullaghmore in Sligo.

`Waveriders’ is a co-production between Inís Films based in Dublin, Ireland and Besom productions based in Derry, Northern Ireland. It was directed by Joel Conroy, produced by Margo Harkin, narrated by Cillian Murphy, written by Lauren Davies and Joel Conroy with Daniel Trapp as Director of Photography.

It features Richard Fitzgerald, Gabe Davies, Kelly Slater, Chris, Keith and Dan Malloy, Rabbit Kekai, Kevin Naughton, Craig Peterson, Drew Kampion, Arthur Verge, Andy Hill, Alastair Mennie, Easkey Britton and John McCarthy.

The film premieres at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival on Wednesday, January 28th 2009 at 7:30 pm in the historic 2,500 capacity Arlington theatre, ahead of its Irish & UK release on April 3rd. The Santa Barbara screening will be attended by surfers Chris, Keith & Dan Malloy, Kelly Slater (World Champion), Gabe Davis and the documentary co-writer Lauren Davies. Director Joel Conroy and Producer Margo Harkin will present the film and take part in a question and answer session. A second screening date has been announced for Friday 30th January at 1.00pm in the Metro 4, Theatre 1.

‘Waveriders’ had its world premiere at the Jameson Dublin International Film Festival 2008 where it won the Audience Award for Best Film and was critically acclaimed. The film has recently been nominated for two Irish Film and Television Awards in the categories of Best Feature Documentary and Best Sound. (The awards ceremony will take in Dublin, Ireland on 14th February 2009).

The film was financed by the European Union through the Interreg IIIA Programme managed for the Special EU Programmes Body by the ICBAN Partnership, Northern Ireland Screen, BBC Northern Ireland and the Broadcasting Commission of Ireland with the participation of Bord Scannán na hÉireann / The Irish Film Board.

2009 Rising Stars
Actors Sarah Bolger, Michael Fassbender, director Lance Daly, and scriptwriter Enda Walsh have been announced by Bord Scannán na hÉireann/the Irish Film Board (IFB) and the Irish Film and Television Academy (IFTA) as the nominees for the Rising Star Award 2009 - the winner of which will be announced at the Irish Film and Television Awards Ceremony on February 14th.

Selected by a special jury and sponsored by the IFB, the Rising Star Award aims to highlight exceptional new talent working in all areas of the Irish film industry.

The 2008 Rising Star Award was won by actress Saoirse Ronan following her breakthrough and Oscar nominated performance in ‘Atonement’. This year Ronan is nominated for two IFTA Awards for her roles in ‘City of Ember’ and ‘Death Defying Acts’, and most recently she has starred in Peter Jackson’s ‘The Lovely Bones’.

Simon Perry, Chief Executive, Bord Scannán na hÉireann/the Irish Film Board said:

“Nurturing new talent is a key objective of the Irish Film Board and the Rising Star Award acts as an excellent showcase of talent both in front of and behind the camera. A native of Dublin, 17 year old Sarah Bolger’s debut movie role came in 1999 starring alongside Liam Cunningham and Orla Brady in ‘A Love Divided’. She followed that with a role in ‘A Secret Affair’ (1999) and Jim Sheridan’s ‘In America’ (2002), which also co-starred her younger sister Emma. Sarah has more recently appeared in feature films ‘Tara Road’ (2005), ‘Alex Rider: Operation Stormbreaker’ (2006). In 2008 she starred alongside Freddie Highmore in ‘The Spiderwick Chronicles’, for which she is nominated for the Best Supporting Actress IFTA this year. Her television appearances include ‘The Clinic’ and the IFTA winning drama ‘The Tudors’. Sarah has also been selected as Ireland’s Rising Star at the Berlin Film Festival (5 – 15 February 2009).

Lance Daly wrote, directed and produced his first feature, ‘Last Days in Dublin’ in 2001, with a shoestring budget on the streets of Dublin, Paris, New York and Cairo. His second film, ‘The Halo Effect’, released in 2004, starred Stephen Rea and was nominated for five IFTAs, including Best Script. ‘Kisses’ is Lance's third feature and was released across Ireland in November 2008 – winning critical acclaim. It won Best Irish Feature at Galway Film Fleadh in 2008 and screened at the Toronto, Locarno, Telluride and Cairo film festivals amongst others.

Michael Fassbender was born in Heidelberg, Germany, to a German father and Irish mother. They moved to Killarney in Ireland after he was just a few years old, where he was raised before attending London’s Drama Centre. His first major role was as Sergeant Burton Pat Christenson in Steven Spielberg’s award-winning ‘Band of Brothers’. The big-screen adaptation of Frank Miller’s graphic novel, ‘300’, gave Michael his first movie role and numerous others have followed, including Francois Ozon’s ‘Angel’, Joel Schumacher’s ‘Town Creek’ and James Watkins’ ‘Eden Lake’. This year the actor has delivered critically acclaimed performances in the feature film ‘Hunger’ and TV drama ‘The Devil’s Whore’, which have earned him two IFTA nominations. His recent work includes Andrea Arnold’s ‘Fish Tank’ and he is currently shooting Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Inglorious Bastards’, both due for release in 2009.

Born 1967 in Dublin, Enda Walsh is an award-winning writer for theatre. Winner of the 1997 George Devine and Stewart Parker awards, Walsh’s breakthrough, both in Ireland and internationally, was the multi-award winning ‘Disco Pigs’. Enda’s adaptation of the play, directed by Kirsten Sheridan and starring Eileen Cassidy and Cillian Murphy, premiered at the Berlin Film Festival in 2001. In 2008, Enda co-wrote the screenplay for ‘Hunger’, a film which portrays the final 66 days in the life of hunger striker Bobby Sands, with director Steve McQueen. The film has received global critical acclaim and numerous international awards, including the Cannes Camera d’Or. Hunger was recently nominated for Best British Film at the BAFTA Film Awards and Walsh has received an IFTA nomination for Best Script Film.

The 6th Annual Irish Film & Television Awards will take place at Dublin’s Burlington Hotel on 14 February 2009.

Бедный Киллиан. Мало того, что человек не может жить своей жизнью так, чтобы рядом не вертелось с десяток фотографов, так еще каждый его неверный шаг вызывает... сверх бурную реакцию. Ребята, я у вас новенькая, со своими заморочками лезть не буду, но мне кажется, что фанаты и поклонники нужны затем, чтобы поддерживать кумира, а не размазывать его по бетону, как только он на градус отклонится от идеального образа. Фанатская любовь - вообще чувство одностороннее. Подразумевающее, что мы ему благодарны за то, какой он талантливый, славный и хорошенький, мы его любим, мы о нем думаем-говорим-мечтаем-и-не-только. Он нам по этому поводу ни черта не должен. Никакой ответственности перед нами он не несет. И если ему зачем-то нужно нажраться с Сиеной Миллер - так ради бога. Это очень грустно, но мы ведь почти ничего о нем не знаем. Мы не знаем, что было за час до вспышки, и за два, и за сутки, - и не знаем, что было после. Может быть, Ивон его с утра кефиром отпаивала и по головке гладила со словами "Бедный мой, как же ты так вляпался по самые уши?". It is one of the most iconic paintings to hang in any UK gallery, one of the best known images of Christ, and Salvador Dali's most famous work.

But now a friend of the Spanish artist claims Glasgow's Christ of St John of the Cross, voted Scotland's favourite painting, was not painted solely by Dali.

Stan Lauryssens, a Belgian crime writer whose own colourful life story is now being made into a film starring Al Pacino and Cillian Murphy, was once jailed for selling bogus Dali paintings, an occupation that made him millions of pounds.

In an interview with The Herald, Lauryssens says he believes the famous figure of Christ in the Glasgow-owned painting was in fact painted by one of his assistants. He claims Dali did not have the artistic skill to paint the image of the body of Christ.

Lauryssens has written about his experiences in Dali and I: Exposing the Dark Circus of the International Art Market, the basis for the movie in which Pacino will play Dali.

When the writer was on the run from authorities in Belgium, he moved to Spain and became a friend of the painter. He became part of the inner circle of Dali's associates, including his assistants, led by a painter named Isidro Bea. Eventually Lauryssens was caught and jailed in Spain, where he served four months for selling the fake paintings.

Lauryssens says that only the lower section of the Glasgow painting, the seascape area with figures depicted beneath the hanging figure of Christ, was painted by the Spanish master of surrealism.

"Dali could not have painted the figure of Christ on the cross - he categorically could not paint musculature like a Renaissance artist," he said.

"Instead, he paid someone to hang on a cross and photographed him from above; then his assistants, like Isidro Bea, worked from that image.

"This is still a genuine Dali, though, because it is a work of genius - and it was his vision, his imagination, his creativity that made it."

Glasgow bought the painting from Dali in a now famous deal in 1951, brokered by Dr Tom Honeyman, the director of Glasgow Museums. Its cost of £8200 was considered high but, crucially for the city, also included the copyright.

The image is now so famous and popular that the city has recently hired lawyers to search the world for breach of copyright in an attempt to recoup lost revenue and start legal action against those who refuse to comply.

Last night, Mark O'Neill, head of museums for Culture and Sport Glasgow, dismissed Lauryssens' claim.

"It is just speculation. It is strange, because one of the serious criticisms of Dali is that he was too facile, too skilled, that he could draw anything and was therefore too slick," he said.

"This is not based on evidence, but based on speculation about Dali's abilities. Artists have used assistants throughout history, but usually it is the other way around to what Mr Lauryssens is suggesting - the artist will paint the main figure and the assistants fill out the rest of the painting. It's rarely claimed the assistants are more skilled than the main artist."

He added: "I would like to see evidence that he lacked technical proficiency. I don't think this holds any water. Dali was in some ways a disturbed and disreputable character and I can see why a crime writer would be interested in him, however."

Julian Spalding, the former director of art galleries and museums in Glasgow, Sheffield, Manchester, and and now a writer on art, added: "I think this is nonsense. Dali could paint anything, there should be no doubt over his ability to reproduce anything, there's nothing he could not do.

"He had tremendous technical ability, and the sheer quality of the painting of the Christ figure is fantastic. The concept was Dali's and the execution was Dali's, which is not to say he did not get some help from assistants. I think his reasoning on this is all wrong: Dali loved painting muscles and bulges and hair and all those things."

A spokesman for Culture and Sport Glasgow, which runs the city's museums and art galleries, released a statement that read: "Mr Lauryssens is entitled to his opinions. However, Mr Lauryssens is not an artist, not an art expert and his dealings in the sale of art have led him through an extremely chequered past."

Hollywood star Cillian Murphy has swapped his movie script to spin the disks this week. He went from Disco Pigs to disc jockey after agreeing to present a special edition of Revolver on 2FM's new digital station 2XM.

In a show broadcast this morning, the Cork-born thespian revealed in an exclusive interview his passion for music, which saw himfront a rock band, Sons of Mister Green Jeans.

Speaking about the Frank Zappa-influenced group, he explained how glad he is that he didn't sell out to a major label.

"We were offered a record deal by a record company in London but it wasn't the right time and I'm very glad in retrospect that we didn't sign because you kind of sign away your life to a label and the whole of your music.

"Nowadays people can record in their bedroom and they can make something that's full of integrity and then licence it to a record label," he said.

He also spoke openly about dropping out of his law course at University College Cork and how he went on to find fame and fortune as an actor.

Murphy has also put the finishing touches to a new movie, Perrier's Bounty, in which he stars alongside Brendan Gleeson and Jim Broadbent.

"It's written by Mark O'Rowe who wrote Intermission and it's kind of a weird black comedy set in the Dublin underworld and I play a fella out of his depth," he continued.

В передаче Киллиан рассказывал о возможности начать музыкальную карьеру в юности, когда Киллиан играл и пел в группе "The Sons of Mr. Green "
