VENICE -- Irish shingle Parallel Pictures is bringing together the cream of Irish film talent for a brace of projects.

First up is an adaptation of Irish author Flann O'Brien's seminal metaphysical novel "At Swim-Two-Birds." Irish thesp Brendan Gleeson will make his directorial debut with the pic, a coming-of-age tale about a 19-year-old student who sees the fictional characters in the play he's writing intertwining with the people in his life. Colin Farrell, Cillian Murphy and Gabriel Byrne have all boarded the $11 million project. Gleeson adapted the book for the screen and will also co-star.

Parallel topper Alan Moloney is also producing "The Virgin of Las Vegas" with U2 frontman Bono. Liam Neeson is attached to star in the $14 million project, which affectionately recalls the Irish pop culture phenomenon of show bands. Show bands, which became popular across Ireland before the onslaught of TV, used to play cover songs in the early days of rock 'n' roll and amassed large followings across the country. Neeson will play an aging show band singer, prone to drink and living in Vegas, who finds his life turned on its head following the arrival of a mysterious stranger. Barry Devlin is penning the script.

This year, Parallel Pictures produced a pair of pics world preeming in Toronto: "Triage," a dark drama directed by Danis Tanovic and starring Farrell, and "Perrier's Bounty," directed by Ian Fitzgibbon and starring Murphy. U.K.-based Hanway Films is handling international sales on both projects.

The healthy state of Parallel's current slate also belies the uncertainty over the future of the Irish Film Board, which may be shut down if a proposal published this summer in a government-commissioned report is adopted. As things stand, producers filming in Ireland can expect to receive up to 40% of their production budget offset by the Irish Film Board and the Section 481 tax incentive.

"I would be amazed if they actually shut it down," said Moloney. "The film board, and film industry in general, contributes so much to Ireland's economy. It more than makes its money back when you consider the bigger picture."

This month Irish actor Brendan Gleeson is bringing Ireland’s leading men together to make the film version of Flann O'Brien’s masterpiece At Swim-Two-Birds. The dream cast will include Gabriel Byrne, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Cillian Murphy and Colin Farrell.

All four have worked with Gleeson before but have never appeared in a film together. Gleeson himself will make his directorial debut with the film, a coming-of-age tale about a lazy, frequently drunk 19-year-old Irish college student who lives with his killjoy uncle in Dublin.

The young man’s writing a second rate novel he’s too lazy to finish and things get sticky when the characters he’s created come to life and start to rebel against him.

Gleeson knows that each of these world famous Irish actors have genuine comic gifts (and Gleeson’s no shrinking violet himself) so expect something completely out of the ordinary. The film is currently in production in Ireland.

A number of exciting film projects are currently nudging over the horizon. In Peter Weir’s The Way Back , he stars as one member of a group of soldiers who escape from a Russian gulag. He appears opposite Keira Knightley in a thriller entitled London Boulevard . And then there is Brendan Gleeson’s indecently exciting adaption of At Swim Two Birds . There is talk of Gabriel Byrne, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Cillian Murphy and Gleeson himself all co-starring. Phew!

“You’d be terrified to say it will definitely happen,” he says. “It’s very hard for films that don’t have special effects and have a literary core. Few films have more of a literary core than this. We tried to get it made in March, but the money wasn’t there. So, we’re hoping to get it together in the summer.”

BRENDAN Gleeson's eldest son Domhnall is following in his father's footsteps yet again.

The Harry Potter actor will be starring alongside his award-winning dad in his latest flick At Swim-Two-Birds.

And while he is no stranger to joining his father on the big screen, this time he will be accompanied by a team made up of Irish acting royalty.

In a true indication that he has hit the big time, Domhnall has been cast alongside Gabriel Byrne, Colin Farrell, Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Cillian Murphy.

The film is still described as being in pre-production and the big screen adaptation is the brainchild of none other than Brendan himself.

Flame-haired Domhnall is no stranger to accolades and even earned a Tony award nomination in 2006 for his role in The Lieutenant of Inishmore.

Impressive

Most recently he displayed his comedic chops alongside Amy Huberman in the RTE sketch show Your Bad Self.

But since the programme failed to set the world alight, he has been focusing his efforts on his family's foray - that of the film world.

The up and coming actor already has an impressive resume under his belt in spite of being relatively new to the industry - making his screen debut six years ago.

With hits such as Perrier's Bounty and the blockbuster series Harry Potter series under his belt, he is becoming a force to be reckoned with in Hollywood.

And his involvement in At Swim-Two-Birds, which tells the compelling story of a writer whose own life begins to fuse with that of his characters is set to send his career skyrocketing.

As his star continues to rise, he has also dipped into behind-the-scenes work -- successfully penning and directing short film Noreen starring his famous father and brother Briain.

"Noreen was a lot of pressure, especially trying to fit in into the schedule we had. We worked around my dad's schedule but in the end I was the one who had to leave the set early on the fourth day to fly out for Harry Potter.

"It was absolute madness - it ended up that though we were due to shoot for four full days it was snowing when we got down and we were shooting out on the roads so we were faced with that and on top of that on the last day I had to take the half day."

The film’s IMDB.com website also shows that Colin Farrell, Gabriel Byrne, Cillian Murphy and Jonathan Rhys Meyers are confirmed to be involved. This film filled with Irish acting royalty is said to be in the pre-production stages. In fact the group of actors have been named the “Pat Pack” and they’ll cause quite a stir when they star filming next summer.
